EQUINE PHOTOGRAPHY DAY
In 2019 I ran my first pilot photography tuition day held at Foxberry Chasers where we invited a group of riders to bring their horses over for a day full of fun. Topics covered were,
GET OFF AUTO
We spent time understanding the fundamentals of light and how a camera works. Everyone was encouraged to shoot in manual as it was a lesson about making mistakes and understanding why had the camera under or overexposed.
CREATING BEAUTIFUL PORTRAITS
We then headed out to the roaming hills of Caldwell to see how I achieve natural looking portraits. Looking at your backgrounds and what you have to work with. Taking in turns to direct the models, again using manual so reminding photographers to keep an eye on the forever changing exposure.
CAPTURING MOVING OBJECTS
Joining us on the cross country course was another group of riders, learning how to achieve sharp clear motion images, looking at why I would prefer one fence location to shoot over another.
BLACK BEAUTIES
I am renowned for the black headshots of horses and often asked do I just cut them out? That would be too simple right! So a brief covering on Inverse Square Law how things ‘look’ black then we used a barn to experiment with another group of horses.
TALK AND THEN RECAP- What worked? What didnt? What are you proud of? … and will you stay off auto!
